VINEYARD: THE RAMNISTA BLOCKS
“Ramnista,” meaning “royal hill” in the local idiom, reflects the signature rolling terrain of the Kir-Yianni Estate vineyard in Naoussa. The Xinomavro for this wine is sourced from the carefully cultivated ‘Ramnista blocks,’ with each vintage representing a selection of the best parcels from this specific area.
For the 2020 vintage, the primary blocks selected were: #8, #12, #13, #14, #15, #16, #17, #18, and #20.
- Planting Year: Most blocks date back to 1970–1973.
- Exposure: Varies from northeast to southwest, ensuring diverse microclimates.
- Slope: Ranges from 5% to over 16%, contributing to excellent drainage.
- Soil Types: Sandy loam, light sandy loam, loam, and clay loam, with pH levels between 5.5 and 7.5.
- Pruning System: Double Cordon.
- Density: 4,000 plants per hectare.
2020: A REMARKABLE VINTAGE
The year began with a mild winter and low rainfall. From April to June, significant rainfall—sometimes intense—was accompanied by cooler-than-average night temperatures. In mid-July, a beneficial rainfall event (72 mm) refreshed the vines, followed by heavy precipitation in early August. This was succeeded by a long stretch of hot, dry conditions with a pronounced diurnal temperature range, ideal for Xinomavro.
- Harvest: Conducted by hand with strict selection during the first week of October 2020.
- Average Yield: 8,800 kg/ha.
WINEMAKING
Grapes underwent rigorous selection on a conveyor belt before vinification:
- Cold Soaking: 7 days at 8–10°C.
- Fermentation: Lasting 10–15 days with pigeage and pump-overs, conducted in a combination of French oak vats (5 tons) and stainless-steel tanks (5 tons) at 19–23°C, maintained during a post-fermentation maceration period of 2–6 days.
- Malolactic Fermentation: Took place in French oak barrels.
-
Maturation: 16 months in French oak barrels (225 L and 500 L) of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd use.
The first blend was created after six months of maturation, with the final blend completed before bottling.
TASTING NOTE
A garnet red colour introduces this captivating wine. The nose offers intense aromas of cherries, sour cherries, and plums, enriched by herbaceous nuances such as tomato leaf. On the palate, vibrant acidity, velvety tannins, and balanced alcohol create a harmonious structure. Flavours of ripe red fruits are layered with spices, hints of vanilla, and chocolate. The finish is long and lingering, leaving a memorable impression.
